LOS ANGELES - Despite a late comeback attempt, the seventh-ranked UCLA women's soccer team dropped a tough, 2-1 decision to Utah Friday evening at Drake Stadium. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 6-3 on the year. Utah improves to 7-2-1.

Although the Bruins dominated much of the action, it was Utah that got on the board first, scoring on its first shot attempt in the 32nd-minute of the match. Kim Lloyd sent a corner kick into the UCLA box, which found the foot of Melissa Wayman, who put in a strike from about six yards out.

The Utes took a 1-0 advantage heading into the break, however the Bruins came out strong in the second half, recording a number of scoring chances once play resumed. UCLA forward Iris Mora was able to capitalize on her opportunity, tying the match at the 50:49 mark. After receiving a ball at the top of the box and with her back to the goal, she quickly turned, beat her defender and blasted a hard right-footed shot into the top left corner of the goal.

UCLA's luck didn't last long however, as about 15 minutes later the Utes managed to score what ended up being the game-winning goal. Whitney Dorsey slipped in behind the Bruin defense, making a run at Bruin goalkeeper Valerie Henderson. Once Bruin defenders caught up and converged, Dorsey crossed a perfect ball to Chelsea Card, who scored from about five yards out. UCLA, despite several legitimate scoring opportunities in the last few minutes of the match, were held scoreless for the remaining 25 minutes of action.

The Bruins outshot the Utes, 15-4 on the night. Bruin freshman Danesha Adams had a game-high four shots.

Friday marked the first-ever meeting between UCLA and Utah. It also marked the return of Bruin sophomore Mary Castelanelli, who played in her first match in nearly a year after recovering from a back injury.

UCLA returns home on Sunday, facing No. 15 Santa Clara at Noon.
