LOS ANGELES - UCLA greats Joanna Hayes, Suzy Powell and Seilala Sua will be trying to make the 2000 U. S. Olympic track and field team Monday when the trio competes in their final events at the USA Track and Field Trials, held at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento.
Hayes, who won the 1999 NCAA Outdoor 400m hurdle championship as a Bruin senior, will be vying for a top three finish in today?s women?s 400m hurdle final. The top three finishers in each final event make the U. S. Olympic team that will be competing in the 2000 Summer Games, held in Sydney, Australia, Sept. 22-Oct. 1.
In Sunday's 400m hurdle semis, Hayes had the fifth-fastest time (55.32). In Saturday's prelims, her mark of 55.50 was the third-fastest of the day.
Powell and Sua will be competing in Monday's discus final. In the discus qualifying on Sunday, Powell had the best effort, a throw of 203-1. Sua?s mark of 190-6 was the fourth-best qualifying mark. Sua is the two-time defending USA discus champion, winning the event in both 1999 and ?98.
Powell is the school record-holder in the discus (214-0), while Sua is the winningest NCAA Outdoor female competitor in history. During her Bruin career, she won six NCAA Outdoor throwing titles, including the 2000 and '99 shot put and discus. She is only the second women?s athlete in NCAA Outdoor history to win an individual event (discus, 1997-2000) four consecutive years.
