Ojai, Calif. - Three UCLA men's tennis players won first-round singles matches Thursday in the opening day of competition at the 2005 Pac-10 Championships at Ojai's Libbey Park.
Alberto Francis, Kris Kwinta and Philipp Gruendler all won main draw singles matches earlier Thursday. Kwinta defeated Arizona's Colin O'Grady, 6-4, 6-4 before falling to Washington's Alex Slovic, 7-5, 6-2 in the second round. Gruendler was a straight-set winner over Oregon's Manuel Kost, setting up a second-round showdown with Cal's Conor Niland to be played later Thursday evening. Francis defeated ASU's Jonathan Kinsella in the first round, but was knocked out of the tournament by Washington's Alex Vlaski, 6-2, 6-2 in second-round action. Chris Lam lost in the first round to Cal's Lennart Maack in three sets.
In the Pac-10 Invitational Draw, freshman Mathieu Dehaine had a bye in the first round and then defeated Washington's Chris Floyd, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the second round. Fellow freshman Jeremy Drean lost in the first round to Arizona's Francois Vandermerwe.
