Los Angeles - The UCLA women's rowing team is set to compete at the 8th Annual Berg Cup this Saturday, March 22, in Newport Beach, CA. The regatta, hosted by Orange Coast College, honors Richard Berg, an esteemed supporter of the OCC women's rowing program. Races are scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m.
The 2002 Berg Cup:
Last year at the Berg Cup, the UCLA V8 placed third in the cup race. The University of San Diego Toreros defended their crown with an 11-second victory over OCC.
Between the second varsity eights, the Bruins finished second behind USD. The Bruins also finished second between the first novice eights, only 1-second behind UC Irvine, but UCLA's second novice eight defeated UC Irvine by 7-seconds to capture their event.
In their 2003 season opener, the UCLA Bruins hosted the Long Beach State 49ers in Ballona Creek - Marina del Rey, CA. Despite moderate precipitation, variable winds, and high currents in the creek, the Bruins won all three of their races.
Two eights were christened after the races, the "Still Brothers," honoring former elite Bruin alumni rowers, Kevin and Mike Still, and the "Bobby Field," in recognition of the contribution to UCLA women's rowing by Assistant Athletic Director Bob Field.
