UCLA alum Jess Strutzel on Friday advanced to the men's 800m final at the World University Games in Beijing, China. The final is set for Saturday.

On Friday, two Team USA 800m men's runners arrived in Saturday's final by advancing out of their Friday semi-finals. The American men employed come-from-behind tactics. Strutzel hung at the back of the pack in his 800m semi-final heat through 500m, then surged in the last 50m to nab the fourth and final qualifying spot with a time of 1:46.70. His teammate, Derrick Peterson, moved from back-to-front on the last lap to win his 800m semi heat in a time of 1:46.91.

Team USA's track and field medal count at the WUGs stands at six gold and two bronze.
