LOS ANGELES, Calif. - UCLA's women's and men's varsity cross country teams will compete in two different meets this weekend. On Friday (Oct. 16), Eric Peterson's UCLA women's team, rated No. 24 in the U. S., will travel to Arizona to compete in the Sun Devil Invitational and Bob Larsen's UCLA men's squad on Saturday (Oct. 17) will travel to San Diego to run in the Triton Invite.

In Arizona on Friday, the women's 5,000m race will start at 4:30 p.m. at Freestone Park in Gilbert, located about 15 miles from the Arizona State campus. On Saturday, the men's 8,000m race will start at 9 a.m. on the campus of UC San Diego.

Last weekend, both UCLA teams competed at the Murray Keatinge Invite, hosted by the University of Maine (Orono,ME). The Bruin women won their division, while the UCLA men placed fourth. In the women's division, the Bruins won with 35 points, ahead of Boston College (46), Connecticut (112), Vermont (117) and New Hampshire (125). UCLA's men were fourth with 91 points, behind first-place Michigan (27 points), Iowa 64) and New Hampshire (76).

The Bruin women were led by sophomore Kelly Cohn, from Stockdale HS in Bakersfield; junior Kara Bernard, from Palisades HS in Los Angeles; sophomore Julie Ott, from University of San Diego HS and freshman Elaine Canchola, from Ojai HS in Nordhoff. Cohn led the Bruins by placing fourth, with a time of 17:49.72 over the 5,000m course. She has been the Bruins' top runner in every major invite this fall. Barnard was fifth (17:50.66), Ott seventh (18:02.23) and Canchola eighth (18:03.86).

UCLA' s men in Maine were led by senior Mark Hauser, from St. Augustine HS in San Diego. Hauser, who has been UCLA's top runner all season and is a two- time NCAA indoor distance All-American, placed fourth, with a time of 24:24.78 over the five-mile course.

Looking ahead, on Oct. 24, the Bruins will compete at the Cal Poly-Pomona Invite and on Oct. 31, the University of Oregon will host the Pacific-10 Championships in Eugene. Last year, both the Bruin men and women placed fourth at the league championship.
