Kristee Porter Declared Ineligible By UCLA

Release:  10/19/2001

Oct. 19, 2001

Senior volleyball player Kristee Porter has been declared ineligible for competition by UCLA, it was announced today.

UCLA has become aware of the possibility that Porter inadvertently accepted what would be considered by the NCAA as "extra benefits." As part of the process, UCLA declared Porter ineligible for competition. UCLA has investigated the matter and forwarded a report to the NCAA. The report includes the facts of the case and a request that Porter's eligibility be restored. Until the NCAA renders a decision, Porter will not be allowed to compete.

"We recently were made aware of a possible violation in connection with Kristee and have forwarded our findings to the NCAA," said Associate Athletic Director Betsy Stephenson. "We feel it is in the best interest of the University to withhold her from matches until we receive a decision from the NCAA."

Stephenson indicated that the issue surrounds the acceptance of items from a person whom Porter has considered a friend for three years. Recently, the person has been a part-time occupant at Porter's apartment.

NCAA rules state that for a benefit to be permissible, the relationship between the student-athlete and friend must pre-date the student-athlete's status as a prospect. That was not the case in this matter, because Porter and the person became friends following Porter's enrollment at UCLA.

In addition, the person is not believed to be an agent or involved in the activities of a sports agent in any way and is not a booster of the UCLA athletic program.

UCLA will not comment further until the situation has been resolved.
