Trackwire Ranks UCLA Women No. 1 In the U. S. for Fifth Consecutive Week

May 16, 2001

As the UCLA track and field teams prepare for this weekend's (May 19-20) 2001 Pacific-10 Championships at Berkeley, Jeanette Bolden's UCLA women's team for the fifth consecutive week is rated No. 1 in the U. S. by Trackwire, and Art Venegas' Bruin men's squad is No. 3 in the nation, according to Team Power Ranking. The rankings were released this week.

In the women's Trackwire Top 25, UCLA is No. 1 with 76 points, ahead of No. 2 USC (59), No. 3 South Carolina (50), No. 4 BYU (42) and No. 5 Clemson (36). UCLA's women have already defeated USC once this season, 85-78 in the annual dual meet held at USC on May 5. Both teams are expected to battle for first-place at the Pac-10 and upcoming 2001 NCAA Outdoor (May 30-June 2, Eugene, OR) Championships.

The Bruin men have not been in the Trackwire Top 25 for the last three weeks. The Top Five men's teams in the nation, according to Trackwire are ' No. 1 Tennessee (51), No. 2 LSU/TCU (46) and No. 4 Stanford/Florida (40).

In this week's Team Power Ranking, the UCLA men are No. 3 in the U. S. with 364.7 points, ahead of No. 4 USC (361.44) and No. 5 Texas A&M (355.23). The nation's Top Two squads according to Team Power Ranking are No. 1 Tennessee (375.13) and No. 2 Texas (370.21). Even though the USC men defeated UCLA in the annual dual meet, 82-81 on May 5, snapping UCLA's 22-meet winning streak, the Bruins, along with USC and Stanford, are one of the meet favorites to win this weekend's Pac-10 meet.

In the women's Team Power Ranking, UCLA remains No. 1 with 401.26 points, ahead of No. 2 USC (379.4), No. 3 North Carolina (375.98), No. 4 BYU (375.03) and No. 5 Arizona State (372.43).

Trackwire is based upon predictions as to how teams will score at the upcoming 2001 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Team Power Ranking is computer scoring based on a team's individual top marks and dual meet strength.
