LONG BEACH, Calif. - The UCLA Women's Water Polo team took advantage of an early 3-0 lead at Long Beach State and were able to hold off the 49ers for a 5-3 victory. The No. 3 Bruins improve to 19-3 overall and 8-1 in the MPSF and will finish the 2004 regular season with MPSF home games against San Jose State and Stanford.
The Bruins got things going with just 0:16 left in the first quarter on a goal by Molly Cahill. 49er goalie Bri Hawkins, who finished with 10 goalie saves, had five saves in the first quarter alone, but Cahill scored from 10 feet out to give UCLA a 1-0 lead. In the second quarter the Bruins built the advantage to 3-0 after goals by Jenna Murphy (2:04) and Katie Flanagan (1:14). The 49ers finally found the net with 0:44 left in the half on a six-on-five advantage goal by Robyn Gordin. UCLA goalie Emily Feher had nine goalie saves on the afternoon, three each in the second and third quarters.
The 49ers came out quickly in the second half, scoring the first goal to pull to within 3-2 as Angelica Garcia scored at 5:45. The Bruins pushed the advantage to 4-2 with 2:25 in the period on a goal by Kristina Kunkel. UCLA then took control of the game with a Brittney Bowlus goal at 6:44 in the fourth to grab a 5-2 lead. The 49ers did score one last goal, at 2:25 by Alison Braden, but Feher and a strong Bruin defense kept the 49ers at bay.
The Bruins will close out the regular season next weekend with two MPSF games. UCLA will face San Jose State on Saturday at 1:00 PM and Stanford on Sunday at 1:00 PM. Both games will be played at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.
