UCLA senior forward Matt Barnes has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for January 8 - 13, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.Along with his Pac-10 Player of the Week honor, Barnes was also named the Sports Illustrated and CollegeInsider.com Player of the Week.
Barnes, from Fair Oaks, Calif., averaged 30.5 points and 5.0 rebounds in two games this past week. His impressive play helped guide the Bruins to an 87-77 upset win over top-ranked Kansas.
In UCLA's 81-77 loss to USC, Barnes had a career-high 34 points while adding five rebounds and two assists. He shot 12-of-17 (.706) from the field and 7-of-11 (.636) from three-point range. His seven three-pointers against the Trojans tied a school record. Two days later against Kansas, Barnes posted a game-high 27 points, shooting 10-of-14 (.714) from the field and 3-of-4 (.750) from three-point range, with five rebounds, two assists and one steal.
For the week, Barnes shot 22-of-31 (.710) from the field, 10-of-15 (.667) from three-point range and 7-of-10 (.700) from the foul line. Barnes' 61 points in back-to-back games is the most by a Bruin since the 1994-95 season.
It is the first weekly award for Barnes, the 37th all-time honor for the Bruins.
