Four Bruins competed at the USA Junior and Senior National Championships, held June 19-22 at Stanford's Cobb Track and Angell Field. At the Senior Nationals, Bruins competed in the 400m hurdles and long jump. At the Junior Nationals, Matt Willis competed in the 400m hurdles and Brian Ruziecki, competing unattached, competed in the discus, shot put and hammer.
Senior Nationals Results
Kyle Erickson and John Barbieri, who just completed their Bruin careers, competed in the 400m hurdles. In Friday's preliminaries (6/20), Erickson placed second in heat one with an automatic qualifying time of 50.46, the ninth fastest time of the day. Barbieri placed fifth in heat three in 51.59, but did not advance to the semifinals.
In the semifinals, held Saturday (6/21), Erickson placed eighth in heat one, 14th overall, in 50.99. Only the top-eight finishers advanced to the finals.
Juaune Armon, who was the NCAA West Region and Pac-10 champion, placed 12th (tied for sixth in flight one) with a jump of 24-7.75 (7.51m, +1.9).
Junior Nationals Results
Matt Willis, who was a true freshman in 2003, placed fourth in heat two, sixth overall, in 53.80 and advanced to the finals. On Sunday, he placed third in the finals of the 400m hurdles in a personal best time of 51.89. Willis is an alternate for the US Junior team that will compete at the Pan-American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic August 1-17 (top-two finishers in each event automatically make the US team). With his performance, Willis received Verizon Junior All-America honors (top-eight finishers).
Brian Ruziecki, who redshirted the 2003 season and competed unattached, placed 22nd with a throw of 155-11 (47.52m).
Ruziecki placed 18th with a throw of 173-3 (52.81m).
Ruziecki placed seventh with a throw of 59-6.25 (18.14m). He received Verizon Junior All-America honors for his performance (top-eight finishers).
