College Station, Texas - UCLA sophomore men's tennis player Benjamin Kohlloeffel advanced to the round of 16 in singles play at the NCAA Championships on Thursday at Texas A&M.
Kohlloeffel, a 9-16 seed, defeated Virginia's Rylan Rizza, 6-7(0), 6-2, 6-3 in the second round. Kohlloeffel opened up the tournament by posting a 6-4, 6-4 victory over South Carolina's Tim Eklund in the first round on Wednesday. Next up for Kohlloeffel will be a meeting with Boise State's Luke Shields on Friday.
Kohlloeffel was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Rookie of the Year on Wednesday. He is the second UCLA player to win the award, joining Sebastien Leblanc who received it in 1993. Kohlloeffel is No. 11 in the latest ITA national singles rankings and is the first Bruin to reach 40 wins in a season since 1998.
