PHOENIX, AZ - The second-ranked and undefeated UCLA softball team improved its overall record to 9-0 on Sunday morning with two shutout victories at the Fiesta Bowl Classic Tournament. The Bruins were one of two teams to go undefeated during tournament play with a 6-0 record. Mississippi State was also undefeated with a 4-0 record in tournament play.
In UCLA's first game of the day, the Bruins posted four runs in the second and four runs in the sixth with a single run in the fifth to earn a 9-0 six-inning win over Utah State. The Bruins had four extra-base hits in the game, with Natasha Watley, Stavey Nuveman and Claire Sua all recording doubles with Sua adding a three-run home run in the sixth inning.
Keira Goerl earned the win for the Bruins, striking out seven and walking one while scattering three hits.
In the second game of the day, UCLA scrapped out a 4-0 win over Southwest Texas State, scoring two runs in the fourth and one each in the fifth and sixth innings. UCLA's final run of the game was a leadoff shot by Nuveman, her third of the weekend. Amanda Freed improved to 4-0 with the win, striking out eight and walking two in her seven innings in the circle.
UCLA returns to action on Friday, Feb. 15, at the UNLV Classic in Las Vegas, NV.
