The UCLA swimming and diving team will head to West Lafayette, IN for the Purdue Invitational Friday, Nov. 5 and Saturday, Nov. 6. Purdue is the site of the 2005 NCAA Championships, which are held March 17-19.

The women's swim team is 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in the Pac-10 after opening up October 23 with victories over UC Santa Barbara and Oregon State. The victories gave Head Coach Cyndi Gallagher her 101st and 102nd wins of her career at UCLA.

"We are looking forward to competing against great teams like Texas, Florida, Virginia, Michigan and Purdue that we don't get the opportunity to race against until NCAA's," said Gallagher.

"It should be a great opportunity to see where we are early in the season and what changes we need to make before the Husky Invitational in December."

Junior Kim Vandenberg dominated the first meet, winning three events - 200 Free (1:50.29), 50 Free (24.01), 100 Fly (55.09), and also swam on the winning 200 Medley Relay (1:45.10). Sophomore Jane Imagane and newcomer Chiemi Yamamoto also had an impressive showing in the first meet of the year. Imagane was a dual winner in the 1000 Free (9:59.21) and 500 Free (4:51.08), while Yamamoto had victories in the 200 Breast (2:19.49) and 400 IM (4:23.81).

"It seems like we have gotten hit by the fall season of colds and flu, so we have had to modify our travel roster," said Gallagher. "But those that are going are healthy and will be ready to race."

Along with Vandenberg, Imagane and Yamamoto, the following swimmers will compete in the Purdue Invitational - seniors Melissa Miller, Kim Scarborough, and Lindsey Smart; juniors Kendall Butler, Krista Daley, Liz Keating and Eileen Seissen; sophomores Katie Arnold, Jeana Fuccillo, Courtney Iversen, Isabel Miesner, Katie Nelson, and Amy Thurman; freshmen Shannon Hackett, and Katherine Wong.

Three divers will make the trip to Indiana this weekend - senior Janine Strack, and juniors Amanda Blong and Paige Thompson.

"We are looking forward to visiting the site of this year's NCAA Championship meet," said Head Diving Coach Tom Stebbins. "I believe this will be a great test for our team early in the season and I am looking forward to seeing my group compete against a very strong field."

"I am very excited to see Amanda and Janine compete. They have both had outstanding fall seasons, and I believe will jump out to a big meet right away. Paige Thompson is just coming off of an injury, but looks to be very close to last summer's form."
