THIS WEEK - The UCLA Women's Rowing team, in their debut as an NCAA sport, faces a weekend doubleheader. The two regattas feature the Head of the Marina, hosted by the California Yacht Club, and the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival. The fall races consist of head races, in contrast to the 2000m format followed in the spring. Head races are usually 2.5-3 miles long with 10-15 second interval starts and an occasionally winding course. This weekend is particularly important to the Bruin rowers in the assessment of their training. The two regattas will provide the Varsity rowers with a renewing sense of the competition that encompasses this sport. The Bruin novices hope to gain critical experience as well as exposure.
HEAD OF THE MARINA - On Saturday, November 3, UCLA strokes at home at the Head of the Marina, hosted by the California Yacht Club. Participating schools include Loyola Marymount and UC San Diego. The race begins at 8:00 AM, and features a 3-mile course with a 160-degree turn at the top of the harbor. This will be the first event for the Bruin rowers as an official NCAA sport sponsored by UCLA Athletics. Spectators may watch from the dock, and parking in Dock 52 is free.
PARENT'S DAY - The Head of the Marina is also Parent's Day. Come meet the UCLA Bruin rowers. At 10:00 AM, meet the Coaches. Amy Fuller and Erinn Mc Mahan will explain their programs and their plans for this year's crew. At 11:00 AM, there will be an introduction to rowing under the guidance of the Assistant Coaches.
NEWPORT AUTUMN ROWING FESTIVAL - On Sunday, November 4, the Bruin rowers stroke in Newport. The field of competition includes San Diego State, USD, UCSD, LMU, USC, Stanford, Long Beach State, UCI, and UCSB. The varsity women will race at 8:00 AM, and the novices will commence at 9:30 AM.
