LONG BEACH, Calif. - Freshman driver Brett Ormsby (El Cajon/Valhalla) scored three times and led third-ranked UCLA in a third-quarter outburst, pushing the Bruins past No. 6 Long Beach State 8-6 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's water polo match Friday at Campus Pool.
Ormsby's second goal of the match gave UCLA (2-0, 1-0 MPSF) a 3-1 margin halfway through the second quarter. The 49ers (0-2, 0-2 MPSF) responded by converting three consecutive extra-man opportunities. The Bruins' Matt Flesher (Jr., Diamond Bar/Brea Olinda) sandwiched a goal in between Long Beach possessions, and the match was tied 4-4 at the break.
Nathan Allard put Long Beach ahead 5-4 at the 3:17 mark of the third quarter with another extra-man tally, but UCLA responded by scoring on its next four trips down the pool. Flesher squared the match with an outside shot from six meters, then Alfonso Tucay (Sr., Burbank/Burroughs) took advantage of a blocked shot and dumped home the go-ahead goal at the 2:19 mark.
Ormsby scored on extra-man one minute later, and Ted Peck (Fr., Irvine/University) capped the rally with just eight seconds remaining in the third period, giving UCLA an 8-5 advantage.
All-American goalkeeper Brandon Brooks (Jr., Honolulu, HI/Punahou) tallied 13 saves for the second consecutive contest, including nine in the second half. The Bruins' defense keyed on U.S. National Team member Chris Segesman and held the senior two-meter man scoreless.
"It's always difficult to stop (the 49ers') six-on-five, and they took advantage," Bruins head cach Adam Krikorian said. "But for us to pull the match out anyway is a positive step for our team."
UCLA travels to cross-town foe Loyola Marymount tomorrow (Saturday) at 12 p.m. at LMU's Burns Aquatic Center.
