May 27, 2004

The United States Track Coaches Association has announced the 2004 Mondo district athletes and coaches of the year. Senior Dan Ames has received the distinction as the West region male athlete of the year for the second year in a row. Coach Art Venegas was named the West region coach of the year for the second consecutive year.

This season, Ames has been one of the top performers of the West Region. At the 2004 Pac-10 Championships, he became the first athlete ever to win three throwing events at one Championship meet. He won his second consecutive shot put title with a throw of 65-0 (19.81m). Ames threw 210-8 (64.21m) for his first conference hammer title. And, he defended his discus title with a throw of 185-11 (56.67m).

Two weeks ago, Venegas led the Bruins to the 2004 Pac-10 team title. It was UCLA's 17th conference title and the first since 1998. Earlier this year, he was named the Mondo indoor track coach of the year. The outdoor coach of the year honor completes Venegas' back-to-back Mondo indoor and outdoor coach of the year honors.
