Jason Kapono Named First-Team USBWA All-District 9

March 5, 2002

UCLA junior Jason Kapono is a first-team member of the U. S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-District 9 squad, released on Tuesday.

Kapono, a 6-8 forward from Artesia HS in Lakewood, is one of six Pac-10 representatives on the team, comprised of the top players from the states of Arizona, California, Washington, Oregon, Hawaii and Alaska. UCLA's leader in minutes (35.1), points (16.9), three-point shooting (47.1, 82-174) and foul shooting (86.7, 98-113), Kapono needs three, three-pointers to break his school season record of 84 set last season (he also hit 82 three-pointers as a freshman in 2000).

Already this season, Kapono has earned first team All-Dist. 15 from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), is one of 20 finalists for the Naismith College Basketball Player of the Year honor and he's on the Midseason Top 30 list for the Wooden Award National Player of the Year and All-American team.
