Bruins Down Long Beach State 10-4

March 14, 2003

No. 1 UCLA finished up a two-game homestand with a convincing 10-4 victory over No. 4 Long Beach State at Sunset Canyon Recreation to move to 12-3 overall and 4-2 in the MPSF. UCLA got out to an early 3-1 lead in the first quarter before pulling away with a four goal second quarter to take a 7-2 lead going into the second half. Though the Bruins would only score three times in the second half, the Bruin defense would continue its string of impressive defensive performances by only allowing the 49ers to score once in each quarter.

Maureen Flanagan put the Bruins on top early, scoring before a minute had elapsed in the first quarter. A goal by freshman Kelly Rulon gave the Bruins a 2-0 lead before a Long Beach State goal made it 2-1. However, the Bruins would answer back with a goal by Kristyn Pulver with less then a minute remaining in the first quarter. In the second quarter the Bruins would pull away with goals from Jessica Lopez, Lauren Heineck, Katie Flanagan and Kristyn Pulver, while holding Long Beach State to a single goal. In the third quarter a converted penalty shot from Natalie Golda and another goal from Heineck would put the Bruins up 9-3 going into the final quarter. In the fourth quarter the Bruins would get another goal from Rulon, while holding Long Beach State to a single goal to earn the 10-4 victory.

Sophomore Kristyn Pulver and freshmen Lauren Heineck and Kelly Rulon led the Bruin scoring effort with two goals each. Jessica Lopez, Natalie Golda, Maureen Flanagan, and Katie Flanagan each scored once. For the Long Beach State 49ers, Drue Wawrzynski, Angelica Garcia, Cassie Azevedo and Robyn Gordin each had one goal. Goalie Jaime Hipp had seven saves for the Bruins. Long Beach State goalie Bri Hawkins had two saves.

The Bruins will travel to San Diego tomorrow to face No. 10 UC San Diego and No. 17 Princeton in a Saturday doubleheader.
