The UCLA Bruin swim and dive team had a busy, but succesful weekend competing at the SMU Classic in Dallas, TX and against UCSD and USD in La Jolla, CA. In Dallas, junior Katie Arnold let the Bruins as she was named the "High Point Swimmer of the Meet," while in San Diego, UCLA posted 10 individual wins.
Arnold, who had already won two events on Friday at the SMU Classic, won the 200 Back (1:58.37) and placed third in the 100 Free (51.10) to earn the "High Point Swimmer" award. Senior Kim Vandenberg also had a successful day in the pool as she broke the meet record in the 200 Fly (1:57.47), a record that was set by Olympian Misty Hyman.
The Bruins placed third overall with 302 points, just behind No. 1 Florida (308) and meet champion SMU (320).
"The team stood up and raced well and weren't intimidated by anybody," said Head Coach Cyndi Gallagher. "We showed the Bruins belong in the national spotlight. It was great to have Katie (Arnold) come away with the 'High Point' award and to see Kim break a record because not many records fell at this meet."
Junior Katie Nelson also had an impressive race as she swam to a second-place finish in the 500 Free (4:52.63). Nelson was in third before the last 25yds of the race and sprinted into second to finish strong.
In diving action, junior Sara Clark competed well, placing third with a score of 235.90.
The Bruins defeated both UC San Diego and the University of San Diego on Saturday as UCLA posted 10 individual event victories. UCLA defeated UCSD 205-75 and USD 217-57. Junior Jane Imagane posted a double win as the finished first in the 1000 Free (10:07.33) and 500 Free (4:54.83). Imagane also placed second in the 200 Free (1:52.40).
Also posting wins on Saturday were - senior Eileen Seissen (100 Breast, 1;04.92); senior Krista Daley (200 Fly, 2:05.16); Sophomore Katherine Wong (50 Free, 24.63); freshman Madaleine Stanton (200 Back, 2:07.28); sophomore Chiemi Yamamoto (200 Breast, 2:21.23); junior Isabel Miesner (100 Fly, 58.52); freshman Marisa Samaniego (1M Dive, 226.55); senior Paige Thompson (3M Dive, 259.60).
The 400 Medley Relay team of Stanton, Seissen, Kendall Butler and Wong also won in a time of 3:56.29.
The Bruins improved to 4-0, 1-0 Pac-10 with the wins in San Diego.
The Bruins will be off until November 18 when they head to the Arizona schools for Pac-10 dual meet action.
