Top-Ranked UCLA Travels To Ojai for Pac-10 Championships

April 24, 2001

This Week ...

The UCLA men's tennis team (20-2 overall, 6-1 Pac-10) will send participants to compete in the Pac-10 Individual Conference Championships, held annually in Ojai, California. The tournament begins on Thursday, April 26 and concludes on Sunday April 29.

The Ojai Tennis Tournament...

At last year's tournament, the Bruins claimed both doubles titles and the Invitational division singles crown. Erfan Djahangiri defeated Stanford's Ali Ansari, 6-4, 7-5 to claim the singles title. The tandem of Lassi Ketola and Travis Rettenmaier claimed the Invitational doubles title, posting a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Stanfords' Ali Ansari and Scotty Scott. Former Bruins Brandon Kramer and Jong-Min Lee claimed the Pac-10 championship crown, downing Oregon's Carter and Eisinga, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5. The nation's oldest tournament, "the Ojai," celebrates its 101st anniversary this year. The tournament was founded in 1896 by NCAA double champions William L. Thatcher.

Bruins Finish Second in Conference Play...

The top-ranked Bruins gave it their best shot but fell short in preventing the Stanford Cardinal in earning their fifth straight Pac-10 Conference title. The Cardinal went undefeated in conference action, 7-0, while the Bruins finished 6-1 to finish second, followed by Cal (4-3), Washington (3-4) and USC (3-4).

Bruins In ITA National Rankings...

The Bruins continued to be the top-ranked team in the nation in the latest ITA rankings released on Apr. 18. UCLA received 101.11 points based on the ITA point-per-match computer formula which is based on a points-per-match ranking system. Georgia is second with 93.73 points, followed by Duke (88.10), Texas Christian (87.71), and Stanford (87.16) to round out the top five. In individual rankings also released on April 18, Jean-Julien Rojer is ranked No. 11 in singles. Other Bruins ranked nationally include: Jean-Noel Grinda No. 51, Tobias Clemens, No. 71, Travis Rettenmaier, No. 72, Erfan Djahangiri, No. 79, and Marcin Matkowski, No. 80. Rettenmaier jumped the most among the Bruins in the rankings, going from No. 90 to No. 72. In doubles, three teams are ranked among the top 50. The tandem of Grinda and Rojer are ranked No. 12, Matkowski and Rettenmaier are No. 40, and Clemens and Lassi Ketola are No. 42.

Last Week...

The top-ranked UCLA Bruins tennis team faced the Stanford Cardinal for the third time this season and unfortunately came up on the short end, dropping a 4-3 decision. The Bruins got the first point of the match after taking two of three in doubles. But the Cardinal came back sweeping the Bruins on courts No. 1-4. Ketola and Rettenmaier won their respected matches to even the score at three. The match was decided on court No. 3, as Matkowski gave it his all before bowing out to No. 40 Stanford's David Martin in a tough three-set tie breaker, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(4). The trip did not get any easier as the California Bears were determined to pull off the upset on Sunday but suffered a 4-3 setback. The match, originally scheduled for Friday (Apr. 20) was postponed due to rain. UCLA guaranteed the victory with a 4-1 margin, but the Bears played like the match was still in contention and posted victories on court No. 1 and No. 2. Cal's John Paul defeated Rojer in a three-set tie breaker, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(1) and on court No. 2, Grinda fell to Balazs Veresas in straight sets, 7-6, 7-5.

Next Up...

The Bruins will probably host the NCAA Regionals that will begin on May 12 and will run through May 13 at the LA Tennis Center. Pairings for the 64-team NCAA tournament will be announced on Thursday, May 3 at 3:00 pm. The final four rounds of the NCAA Championships will be held in Athens, Georgia from May 19.
