UCLA junior Roy Moon captured the 104th SCGA Championship Sunday at Torrey Pines Golf Course in LaJolla, CA. Teammate Steve Conway placed second and four other returning UCLA players were among the Top 15 finishers.
Moon posted a final round, one-under par 71 to finish with a 72-hole total of 282, six-under par. Conway fired his second straight, three-under par 69 and vaulted into second place at four-under par 284. The defending champion, USC junior Nico Bollini, finished third at 285 after posting a final round 77.
For Moon, the victory was his first major amateur victory and he became the second UCLA player in three years to win the SCGA title. In 2001, John Merrick won the crown at El Caballero CC. Moon's card featured four birdies and three bogeys, and a birdie at the par 5 18th sealed the two-stroke margin. Conway, who played the final 36 holes in six-under par, played the inward nine in even par 36, but fired a three-under par 33 on the back side for his final score.
Other UCLA players finished as follows. Travis Johnson fired a final round 71 and placed seventh at 291, three-over par. Sophomore John Poucher tied for eighth at 292 after a final round 73. Merrick tied for 11th at 296 and sophomore Breene Murphy tied for 14th at 298.
