Los Angeles - Junior Will Penniall had two hits, including a three-run home run, and four RBI to lead the UCLA Blue Team to a 6-4 win in Game 1 of a best-of-five intrasquad series at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Monday.
The Blue team got on the board early with a RBI double by junior Tim Stewart that scored freshman Eddie Murray in the bottom of the first inning. The Blue Team could have scored two runs on Stewart's double, but senior Chris Jensen was thrown out at home plate by freshman Brandon Crawford after a perfect relay from senior outfielder Anthony Norman.
Penniall knocked his three-run blast off of Gold starter junior Tyson Brummett in the second inning to put the Blue Team up 4-0. Brummett would last 2.1 innings.
A double by freshman Ryan Babineau in the third inning scored sophomore Brady Dolan to increase the Blue lead to 5-0.
The Gold Team would cut that lead to 5-2 in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by senior Josh Roenicke and a RBI single by freshman Jermaine Curtis. Curtis' single was the only hit Blue starting pitcher freshman Robert Dickmann allowed, as the Blue pitching staff would hold the Gold Team to just three hits in the game. Dickmann battled through four innings and struck out two batters.
Penniall was at it again in the sixth inning as he singled, stole second base, and scored on a two-out base hit by Jensen to put the Blue Team up 6-2.
Sophomore Mike Metzger of the Gold Team drove in both Curtis and Norman with a two-out single in the seventh inning to cut the Blue lead to 6-4. The Gold Team would not be able to get any closer than that as freshman Andy Suiter tossed a perfect eighth inning while striking out two batters to record his first save.
