IRVINE, Calif. - UCLA's top-ranked men's water polo team passed its first true test of 2005 Saturday afternoon as the Bruins defeated Bucknell and UC Irvine during day one action at the UC Irvine-hosted SoCal Tournament. The Bruins notched an easy 12-2 win over Bucknell in their first round match Saturday morning before outlasting the Anteaters 9-7 in overtime in the tournament quarterfinals.
Against Bucknell, senior David Pietsch scored three of his four goals in the first period as UCLA improved to 5-0 on the young season. Logan Powell, Tyler Krikorian and Justin Johnson each added two goals to the victory. For Krikorian, the goals were career firsts.
In the quarterfinal match, UCLA overcame a 7-5 deficit late in the fourth quarter and defeated No. 8 UC Irvine, 9-7 in overtime. Sophomore Matthew Jacobs scored with 3:14 left in regulation to draw the Bruins to within 7-6 and then he tied the game with 46 seconds remaining to send the game into extra periods. Grant Zider scored in the first extra session and Pietsch scored the last of his three goals in the second overtime period to close out the scoring. Marco Santos added two goals for the Bruins.
Didinger posted seven saves in front of the net against UCI.
UCLA will face No. 4 Stanford in semifinal action Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. at UC Irvine's Campus Pool. The winner of that contest will face the winner of the 11:45 a.m. matchup between USC and California in tomorrow night's title match.
Tournament Notes: The nation's top four ranked teams (UCLA, Cal, USC and Stanford) are the only four remaining undefeated teams at the tournament and will finish the tournament No. 1-4 based on tomorrow's results.
