Los Angeles - The UCLA women's rowing team opens up its regular season competition this Saturday, Mar. 20, as the Bruins host UC Irvine at Ballona Creek. Both teams will compete in varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight, and varsity four competitions. The first race, the Women's Varsity Four, is scheduled for 8:00 a.m.
UCLA women's rowing starts its third season as an NCAA sport. The program started 30 years ago in 1974 and continued until the end of UCLA's 1991 Pac-10 Championship season. Ten years later, the program was reinstated as a scholarship sport for the 2002 season.
This Saturday's competition against UC Irvine is the first -ever dual meet between the two teams since the program's reinstatement.
The UCLA varsity eight has not dropped a race against UC Irvine in the last two years. Last season, the teams met at the 2003 Berg Cup (Mar. 22) and the prelims of the Women's Cal Cup (Apr. 5) at the San Diego Crew Classic. The Anteaters also competed in the Miller Cup (Apr. 12), but the UCLA and UC Irvine varsity boats did not meet in the regatta.
UC Irvine Notes
The UC Irvine women's rowing team opened up its regular season competition two weeks ago. The Anteaters have already faced UC San Diego (Feb. 28) and Loyola Marymount and San Diego State (Mar. 6) this season.
UC Irvine hosted UC San Diego in its first dual meet of the season. The Anteaters defeated the Tritons by over 20-seconds in the varsity eight competition. UC Irvine was also victorious in the novice eight event but dropped races in the varsity four, second varsity eight, and novice eight events.
UC Irvine competed against Loyola Marymount and San Diego State for the Parker Cup in Marina del Rey, Calif. The teams raced in varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four, novice eight, and novice four events. Loyola Marymount won the varsity eight competition, followed by San Diego State and UC Irvine. The Anteaters' only win came in the varsity four competition.
The UCLA women's rowing team held its first annual class race exhibition, and the Bruin Juniors finished ahead of the class. The UCLA Junior boat defeated the Freshman #1 team in the grand final race to win the intra-squad exhibition. A combined Sophomore/Senior team defeated the Freshman #2 boat in the petite final race to take third.
The event was also Parent/Alumni Day. The UCLA women's rowing team christened two boats named the "Ms. Lin" and the "Big Tom". The "Ms. Lin" honors Lin Werner for her support and dedication to the UCLA women's rowing team, and the "Big Tom" is dedicated to Tom Bengard, father of sophomore rower, Christianne Bengard, for his donation of shell to the program.
