Box Score

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - California broke open a 2-1 game with a five run eighth inning as the Golden Bears defeated UCLA, 7-1 Friday night in the opening game of this weekend's three-game Pac-10 series. Cal's Brennan Boesch was 5-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI while right fielder Chris Jensen added two hits for UCLA in the losing effort.

Bruin starter Hector Ambriz (2-5) suffered the defeat, allowing just two runs on five hits over four innings of work. Lefty Brian Schroeder tossed three effective innings out of the bullpen before the Golden Bears got to reliever Adam Simon in the eighth.

Adam Gold (6-5) earned the win for Cal as he held UCLA (9-29, 0-10 Pac-10) to just four hits and one run over 6.0 innings. Matt Swanson and Joe Todoroff combined for a scoreless final three innings for the Bears.

Cal (28-18, 8-8 Pac-10) took an early 1-0 lead when Boesch tallied his first RBI of the night with a single to right, scoring third baseman Matt Einsphar. The Bears jumped ahead 2-0 an inning later as Kyle Spraker lifted a run-scoring fly ball.

The Bruins came to within a run in the bottom of the seventh and put the tying run on third base but Swanson struck out both Tommy Lansdon and Chris Denove to end the inning. Earlier, first baseman Brett McMillan drove home Ambriz with a tricky-hop double over the first baseman's head. Ambriz had reached on a double of his own, which hit the wall in right center field.

Cal put the game out of reach in the top half of the eighth as the Bears sent 11 men to the plate and totaled five hits in the inning. Aided by two Bruin errors and two walks, California scored one run off Schroeder and four more off Simon before the final out was recorded. Boesch recorded one of his two doubles of the night in the five-run frame and eventually came around to score on the same play after advancing to third on throw home and then coming home on an overthrown ball by Denove.

Sean Carpenter and Matt Sharp both also contributed hits for UCLA and right-hander Kevin Brophy tossed a scoreless 1.1 innings of relief for UCLA to end the game.
