Los Angeles - The No. 8 UCLA women's tennis team visited No. 2 USC on Wednesday, falling to the Trojans 5-2. Another Bruin made her dual-match debut when Feriel Esseghir teamed with Jackie Carleton to help UCLA take the doubles point. Esseghir became the sixth freshman to play during the dual-match season.
Sara Walker and Laura Gordon defeated USC's Melissa Esmero and Carine Vermeulen 9-7, while Carleton and Esseghir beat USC's Anita Loyola and Luana Magnani 8-5. The Trojans took one doubles match from the Bruins when the 20th-ranked duo of Jewel Peterson and Tiffany Brymer beat Susi Wild and Sarah Gregg 8-6.
But the Trojans took control of the match during singles play. National-No. 4 Peterson beat No. 31 Carleton 7-6(2), 6-3, and No. 32 Magnani took the first set from No. 42 Wild 6-2 before Wild retired with Magnani up 1-0 in the second set.
Gregg claimed UCLA's singles point on the afternoon when No. 96 Maureen Diaz retired during the second set. Diaz had won the first set 7-6, but Gregg was up 1-0 in the second set.
UCLA's record falls to 8-5 and 0-1 in Pac-10 play, while USC's rises to 11-1, 1-0 Pac-10. The Bruins will resume on Friday when they visit the Oregon Ducks at 1:30 p.m.
