Three Bruins To Vie For 1999 MAC Collegiate Soccer Player Of The Year Award
By: UCLA Athletics

Oct. 4, 1999

St. Louis, Mo. - A nation-high three UCLA Bruins were selected as candidates for the ninth annual Missouri Athletic Club Sports Foundation Collegiate Player of the Year Award.

Named among the 15 candidates for the official NSCAA/adidas award are junior defender Carlos Bocanegra (Alta Loma, CA/Alta Loma HS) and senior midfielders and co-captains Pete Vagenas (Pasadena, CA/St. Francis HS) and Sasha Victorine (Corona, CA/Rio Americano HS).

Bocanegra leads a UCLA defense which has compiled three shutouts and allowed just seven goals. Last season, he was named by the Missouri Athletic Club as a "Player to Watch" and selected by Soccer America as one of 11 Collegiate MVPs. Offensively this season, he has scored one goal and one assist.

Victorine, a three-time finalist for the MAC Award and a two-time finalist for the Hermann Trophy, leads UCLA in 1999 with six goals and 15 points. Last season, he finished eighth in MAC voting with 10 first-place votes and earned third-team All-America honors by the NSCAA.

Vagenas, voted UCLA's team MVP the past two seasons, is a three-time all-conference selection and a first-team pre-season All-American. He currently ranks fourth on the UCLA team with seven points (2g, 3a).

All three players were on the U.S. Under-23 National Team which won a bronze medal in the 1999 Pan American Games. Vagenas, Team USA's captain, led all U.S. players with two goals, and Bocanegra and Victorine scored a goal apiece.

The winner of the MAC Award will be selected in balloting by NSCAA member coaches from Division I. He will be honored at an awards banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club on Friday, Jan. 7, 2000 and at the NSCAA convention in January in Baltimore.
