Bruins Defeat Baylor, Tennessee at Palm Springs Softball Classic

CATHEDRAL CITY, CA - UCLA (11-0) opened the Palm Springs Classic with two vitories, a run-rul efive inning win over Baylor and a 3-0 victory over No. 12 Tennessee. Both Bruin pitchers earned shutout wins in on the day as Stephanie Ramos was UCLA's top hitter, going 4-for-6 with three runs scored, three RBI and a home run on the day.

UCLA retired Baylor in order in the top of the first inning, Andrea Duran tripled to right center and scored the first run of the game when the throw from the outfield went out of play. The Bruins then loaded the bases on a single by Stephanie Ramos, a walk by Emily Zaplatosch and a single to left by Jodie Legaspi. Pitcher Lisa Dodd then cleared the bases with a grand slam home run to left field, giving the Bruins a 5-0 lead.

In the top of the second, Caitlin Benyi led off with a towering home run to left field, giving UCLA a 6-0 advantage. After a pitching change for Baylor, Andrea Duran started another rally with an infield single. Ramos then singled down the right field line, giving the Bruins runners at the corners with no outs. After Ramos was replaced by pinch-runner Amanda Simpson, a double steal scored Duran, giving the Bruins a 7-0 lead.

After going down in order in the third inning, the Bruins scored two additional runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as Duran earned her third hit of the day, doubling to right field, while Ramos followed suit, completing a 3-for-3 game of her own as she homered to right field, giving the Bruins a 9-0 lead.

In addition to her first inning grand slam, freshman pitcher Lisa Dodd was tossing a no-hitter for 4-1/3 innings before Harmony Schwetheim recorded an infield hit for Baylor's first hit of the game.

Dodd finished with four strikeouts and one walk while facing 17 batters in the game to improve to 5-0 in her Bruin career.

UCLA vs. Tennessee
The contest started at the Yankee Stadium replica at the Big League Field of Dreams complex, and for the second time this season, Caitlin Benyi led off a game with a home run, giving UCLA a 1-0 lead before Tennessee retired a Bruin batter. The game was played in a light rain, which got stronger and resulted in an 85-minute rain delay. Following the rain delay, the teams resumed play on the Pawtucket Field at the Big League Field of Dreams.

Following the rain delay, the Bruins notched two more runs in the third inning as Benyi drew a walk, advanced to second on a fly-ball out by Duran and scored on a single by Ramos. Claire Sua followed with an RBI double, giving the Bruins a 3-0 lead.

The Lady Vols got their first hit of the game in the third inning and had a single to open the top of the seventh inning, but would not mount a scoring threat. Senior Keira Goerl finished the game with a season-high 11 strikeouts as she earned her third shutout victory of the season.

UCLA returns to action on Saturday at the Palm Springs Classic with a 12:30 game against Northwestern followed by a 6 pm game against Penn State.
