This weekend marks the final tournament of the pre-conference season for the Bruins, the Clovis Auto Row Classic in Fresno, CA. This is the sixth time in the seven-year history of the tournament (previously called the Hedrick's Hallowell Chevrolet Classic) that the Bruins have participated, missing only the 2002 incarnation. UCLA is scheduled to play three ranked teams this weekend in Long Beach State, Oregon State and host Fresno State. The Bruins will also see two repeat non-conference opponents in Long Beach State and San Diego State, and will also play first-year program North Texas. The Mean Green previously sponsored the sport from 1985-88, and brought the program back this season.
UCLA Sweeps SDSU Tournament, Down Host School in 10 Innings
UCLA allowed just one run in its five games at the San Diego State Tournament last weekend, a solo seventh inning home run in the tournament opener against Syracuse.
In the weekend's opener against the Orangewomen, UCLA capitalized on a two-RBI first inning single and third inning solo home run by Jodie Legaspi as Keira Goerl struck out nine batters without allowing a walk. In the team's second game of the day, a 4-0 win over Cal Poly, Lisa Dodd struck out six batters with no walks and scattered three hits as third inning home runs from Ashley Herrera and Stephanie Ramos provided three of UCLA's four runs in the game.
Saturday saw the Bruins and host Aztecs locked in a 10-inning pitchers duel where the Bruins recorded seven hits but could not push a run across until Caitlin Benyi ripped a single up the middle to score tiebreak runner Herrera for the 1-0 UCLA win. Goerl was impressive in the circle for the Bruins, striking out a season-high 12 batters, including the first two outs of the top of the 10th inning and striking out the side in the seventh, all looking.
Sunday's action was less dramatic, with the Bruins putting up two runs in the top of the first inning against Nevada, and scoring a third run in the fourth on a solo home run by Benyi. Dodd allowed just two hits to the Wolfpack as she won her eighth game of the season while recording her sixth shutout. In the final game of tournament play, the Bruins matched up with Cal Poly once again. The game remained scoreless until Benyi connected on her eighth home run of the season with two outs in the top of the fourth inning, and UCLA's final three runs of the weekend would score on a Legaspi home run with two outs in the top of the seventh.
