This weekend, the Bruin pole vaulters will kick off the 2003 indoor season at the Pole Vault Summit, held Friday-Saturday, January 17-18, in Reno, NV. Coach Anthony Curran will take a combined squad of UCLA's top men's and women's vaulters.
Jared Drake, Yoo Kim and Pat Luke will represent the Bruin men. Drake and Kim are returning to competition after redshirting the 2002 outdoor season due to injury. Drake, whose career best is17-3, had an indoor season best of 16-8 in 2002. Kim's career best is 17-4 1/-2. Luke vaulted a career best 17-03/4 outdoors last season and placed 12th at the Pac-10 Championships (16-71/2).
The women will be led by returning vaulters Jamie Kolar and Gail Larsen. Larsen vaulted a career best 12-10, placing fifth, at last year's Pac-10 Championships and had an indoor best of 11-93/4. Kolar had an indoor best of 11-9 and an outdoor best of 12-71/2. Also competing for the women will be senior Bridget Pearson and freshman Chelsea Johnson. Pearson returns from a one-year hiatus from the pole vault, having thrown the javelin for the Bruins in 2002. Pearson's career bests in the vault are 12-21/2 and 12-61/2i. Johnson was the prep national leader with her career best 13-6, which she vaulted in winning the CIF Div. III and Golden West Invitational titles.
"We're using this meet as an opener for the indoor season and to guage where all of our athletes are right now," said Curran.
