No. 11 Bruin Swim & Dive Head Crosstown to Battle USC on Saturday

The No. 11 UCLA swimming and dive team (5-3, 2-3 Pac-10) will travel crosstown to the campus of USC for a Lexus Gauntlet showdown with the Trojans, Saturday, Feb. 12 at 1:00 pm. Last season, the Bruins defeated USC 211.50-88.50.

The Bruins have had a strong season, highlighted by junior Kim Vandenberg. Vandenberg has qualified for the NCAA Championships in five different events - 50 Free, 100 Free, 200 Free, 100 Fly, and 200 Fly, and has been an intrigal part of several UCLA relay teams.

Vandenberg is just one of many Bruins having an impressive season. Several UCLA athletes and relays currently rank in the top-25 in college swimming. Vandenberg leads the Bruins with two top-10 rankings: third in the 200 Fly (1:55.69) and sixth in the 100 Fly (53.95). Freshman Nicolette Teo ranks 21st in the 200 Breast (2:16.16), while Jane Imagane (16:40.75) and Katie Nelson (16:40.75) rank 23rd and 24th in the 1650 Freestyle. The 200 Free Relay ranks 20th (1:33.93).

As the Bruins near the end of the season, UCLA has picked up 27 qualifying marks for the NCAA Championships. Vandenberg leads the team with five qualifying marks, highlighted by an "A" standard in the 200 Fly (1:55.69). Vandenberg has the "B" standard in the 50 Free (23.30), 100 Free (50.61), 100 Fly (53.95), and 200 Free (1:49.69). Sophomore Nelson has a "B" qualifier in the 500 Free (4:52.00), 200 Free (1:50.74) and 1650 Free (16:41.01). Imagane also has a "B" qualifier in the 500 Free (4:51.14) and 1650 Free (16:35.57). Kim Scarborough (4:20.56) and Chiemi Yamamoto (4:18.99) have "B" qualifiers in the 400 IM, while Katie Arnold qualified in the 100 Back (55.40). Scarborough has also qualified in the 200 Back (2:00.39) and 200 IM (2:04.73). Yamamoto has a "B" qualifier in the 200 Breast (2:16.70). Jeana Fuccillo picked up a qualifier in the 200 Breast (2:17.91), 200 IM (2:05.18) and 400 IM (4:23.27). Teo has qualified in the 100 (1:03.11) and 200 Breast (2:16.16). Shellene Catalano has swam a "B" time in the 200 Breast (2:17.80).

The 800 Free Relay team swam a "B" time of 7:21.64 with Vandenberg, Imagane, Nelson and Shannon Hackett. The 200 Medley Relay team (Arnold, Eileen Seissen, Vandenberg and Amy Thurman) swam a "B" time of 1:42.66)

Three divers have qualified for the NCAA Zone E Championships - Janine Strack (platform), and Paige Thompson and Amanda Blong in the three-meter springboard.

Looking Ahead
The Bruins will head to Federal Way, WA Feb. 23-26 for the Pac-10 Championships (hosted by Oregon State) then head to Purdue for the NCAA Championships March 17-19.
