UCLA Wraps Up Regular Season This Week
Following a weekend off, the UCLA women's swimming and diving team returns to action this Saturday in a regular season finale against cross-town rival USC. Both swimming and diving events are scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm and will be held at the McDonald's Swim Complex on the USC campus. The Bruins are looking to bounce back after suffering back-to-back setbacks to Stanford (168-132) and California (161-139) on January 26 and 27.
Several Bruins Rank Among The Nation's Elite
Several Bruins are ranked among the nation's best on the Taper & Shave College Quick 50 list released on Feb. 2. Freshman phenom Sara Platzer leads the Bruin contingent, as she is ranked fourth in the 50 Free (22.90) and sixth in the 100 Free (49.54). Senior Beth Goodwin has also made her mark this season as she is ranked third in both the 100 Fly (53.43) and 200 Fly (1:58.14). She also ranks among the nation's best in the 50 Free. Two other Bruins are ranked among the top ten in the 100 fly, Katie Younglove and Julia Voitovitsch who have swam identical times of 54.54, are ranked eighth. Both swimmers also ranked among the top 15 in the 200 Fly. Freshman Brooke Winkler has swam superbly this season and is listed among the top 15 in the 200 IM (2:02.62) and 400 IM (4:18.44). The UCLA relay teams have been just as impressive as the squad is ranked among the top ten in all the relays: 200 Medley Relay (5th/1:42.09), 400 Free Relay (6th/3:23.99), 800 Free (7th/7:23.94), 200 Free Relay (8th/1:33.14) and the 400 Medley Relay (10th/3:45.41).
UCLA Ranked No. 6 In Latest Poll
Head coach Cyndi Gallagher's women's swimming and diving team dropped several notches and is the No. 6 ranked team in the latest College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) poll released on January 18. The Bruins received a total of 161 votes. Georgia, the top ranked team in the country, received 197 votes and five first place votes. Pac-10 schools Arizona and Stanford occupy the second and third spots, while Auburn is ranked No. 5.
