No. 24 Women's Soccer Travels North to USF Diadora Classic

Bruins Travel North - UCLA (2-1-0) travels north this week to play in the USF Diadora Classic. UCLA will face Loyola College of Baltimore (1-0-1) on Saturday, September 12 at 5 pm. The Bruins will face UNC, Charlotte (2-0-0) on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 4 pm. This will be the first time UCLA will play both teams.

Next Week - No. 17 Nebraska (0-1-0) comes to town next week to face the Bruins in one of the biggest games of the season. UCLA will play Nebraska on Friday, Sept. 18 at 8 pm on Spaulding Field in the second game of a doubleheader. UCLA holds the series record against Nebraska at 1-0, with a 1-0 overtime win in 1995. USC will face Baylor at 6 pm in the first game of the doubleheader.

The Bruins will go crosstown on Sunday, Sept. 20 to play in the FILA Challenge at USC. The Bruins and the Baylor Bears (2-0-0) will go head-to-head at 11 am at the Coliseum. This will be the first match-up against the Baylor Bears.

Bruins Go 2-1 in Opening Week - The Bruins opened the '98 season with a three game homestand and came out with a 2-1 record. In the season opener, the Bruins handed Navy a 3-0 loss, outshooting the Midshipmen 25-2. UCLA just edged Cal Poly 1-0 and dropped their first game of the season to No. 21 San Diego State 1- 0.

UCLA In The Polls - UCLA is currently ranked 24th in the nation by Soccer News. UCLA will face No. 17 Nebraska, No. 19 Stanford and No. 23 Arizona State this season.

Leading the Offense - Sophomore forward Venus James, UCLA's second leading scorer in 1997, is continuing in that fashion this season, scoring both of UCLA's game-winning goals this week. James scored in the 49th minute against Navy and scored UCLA's only goal against Cal Poly. James leads the Bruins this season in points (4), goals (2) and game-winners (2).

Freshmen Contribution -UCLA's recruiting class this season is one of the best in school history and the freshmen are stepping up early for the Bruins. Three of UCLA's four goals this week were either scored or assisted by a Bruin freshmen. Leading the newcomers is forward Staci Duncan. Duncan scored the Bruins' second goal against Navy and assisted Venus James on UCLA's lone goal in its 1-0 win over Cal Poly. Defender Bethany Bogart and midfielder Lauren Emblem recorded assists in the 3-0 win over Navy.

Guarding the Net - Junior goalkeeper Lindsay Culp continues her excellent play this season, recording two shutouts this week. With the two shutouts over Navy and Cal Poly, Culp has improved her own record of most career shutouts (10.5) and career wins (30). Although giving up a goal against San Diego State, Culp posted a GAA of 0.33 in UCLA's opening week and improved her career GAA to 0.94.
