Baseball Drops Final Game of Tournament, 2-0 to 16th-ranked Texas A&M

Feb. 24, 2003

Final Stats

On a rainy night with near freezing temperatures in College Station, Texas, the Bruins (8-9) fell to 16th-ranked Texas A&M (9-2) at Olsen Field in the last game of the Dominos Pizza Aggie Baseball Classic.

Texas A&M struck early, scoring a run in the top of the first. Erik Schindewolf led off with a double down the left field line. He advanced to third when Hector Ambriz's pick off throw dribbled into center field. Schindewolf came home on an RBI-single from Cory Patton.

After the Bruins went down in order in the second, the Aggies added another run in the top of the third. A lead-off single from Schindewolf started the rally again and he went to second on a passed ball. Another RBI-single from Patton brough Schindewolf in and the Aggies led 2-0 after two and a half innings.

UCLA attempted a two-out rally in the third inning when singles from Preston Griffin and Brett McMillan put a runner in scoring position for Billy Susdorf. However, after battling to a full count, Susdorf flew out to left field.

The Bruins also missed a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the sixth. After two outs, Wes Whisler singled and Chris Denove had an infield single to put runners on first and second. Designated hitter Matt Sharp popped up to the first baseman to end the inning and the Bruins' chance at getting on the board.

The Aggies sealed the victory in the top of the seventh when Matt Alexander reached base on a walk. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved up to third base on a ground out. Alexander would cross the plate on another wild pitch from Ambriz.

Ambriz pitched six and two-thirds innings of the contest, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out eight. The eight strike outs were a new career-high for the freshman right-hander.

Kevin Jerkens entered in the top of the seventh with a runner on first, who been issued a walk to reach base, and two outs. After allowing a single, he retired the final Aggie batter, who flew out to center field.

In the bottom of the seventh, Ryan McCarthy and Sean Carpenter were both struck-out by Aggie reliever Scott Beerer. With two-outs, pinch hitter Chris Jensen hit into the gap in left center, but center fielder Justin Ruggiano laid out and caught the ball to end the game.

Bruin pitcher Casey Janssen and position players Whisler, Susdorf and McCarthy were all named to the all-tournament team following the game.

The Bruins will be back in action on Friday when they face defending national champion Texas at the Kia Baseball Bash at Cal State Fullerton. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
