Defense Lifts Miami Past UCLA, 5-2

Feb. 12, 2006

Box Score

Los Angeles - The UCLA baseball team had three different scoring opportunities taken away by solid Miami defense, as the Hurricanes hung on for a 5-2 win over the Bruins on Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The loss drops the Bruins to 2-4, and the Hurricanes improve to 5-3 with the win.

Down 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the Bruins mounted a rally by loading the bases with one out. Freshman infielder Jermaine Curtis got it going for UCLA after being hit by a pitch and advancing to second base on a wild pitch. Freshman catcher Ryan Babineau followed with a single through the right side to move Curtis to third. Back-to-back walks to freshman infielder Brandon Crawford and junior outfielder Will Penniall would score the Bruins' first run of the game.

With the bases still loaded, senior infielder Sean Smith ripped a line drive to left field that would have easily scored two runs, but was snagged by Miami outfielder Blake Tekotte's diving catch. Babineau tagged on the play but was called out after the umpires ruled he left the base early.

The Bruins used another scoring threat in the eighth inning to cut deficit to 5-2. Smith led the inning off with a single, followed by a double by junior Hector Ambriz to put Smith at third. Senior Anthony Norman scored Smith on a sacrifice fly. With two outs and Ambriz at second base, freshman outfielder Tim Murphy belted a fly ball to deep center field that was robbed off the wall by Miami outfielder Jon Jay.

UCLA had one more chance to come from behind in the ninth inning, after a single up the middle by senior Brett McMillan, a walk to Crawford, and a single up the middle by Penniall loaded the bases with one out. Miami then converted a swift 6-4-3 double play on a Smith ground ball to stop the threat and end the game.

Junior Tyson Brummett (1-1) tossed 7.1 innings with four strikeouts on the mound for the Bruins despite the loss.

UCLA will next play UC Riverside on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
