Ianni, Wynne Selected As Semifinalists For M.A.C. Hermann Trophy

Nov. 16, 2005

Junior midfielder Patrick Ianni (Lodi, Calif.) and sophomore defender Marvell Wynne (Poway, Calif.) have been named as semifinalists for the 2005 Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy, college soccer's version of the Heisman Trophy. The 15 semifinalists were chosen by a panel of coaches from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). UCLA is one of just two schools to have multiple nominees, joining Indiana, which has three players on the ballot.

The winner will be determined in voting by NSCAA Division I member coaches. Three men's and three women's finalists for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy will be announced at the 2005 Men's College Cup on Dec. 9. The finalists will be invited to the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on Friday, Jan. 6, 2006, for the announcement of the winner at a press conference which will be telecast live by ESPNews. Both winners will be presented the prestigious crystal soccer ball trophy at a banquet later that evening.

Marvell Wynne

Ianni and Wynne are key members of UCLA's top-ranked defense that has shut out 14 opponents in 2005, the second-highest total in school history. Behind their stellar play, UCLA has compiled a 0.46 goals against average, which is on pace to break the school record of 0.52, set in 2003. The Bruins also lead the nation in shutout percentage (0.74). UCLA won the Pac-10 title for the fourth consecutive year, going 7-1-2 in conference play and allowing only two goals to Pac-10 opponents. UCLA's team goals against average in the Pac-10 was 0.19.

The two players were also effective on the offensive front, scoring their first collegiate goals this season. Ianni, the 2004 Pac-10 Co-Player of the Year, has two goals and two assists. He scored the game-winning goal in a road contest at Washington and assisted on the game-winning goal in overtime at Stanford. Wynne, who is one of just two defenders nominated, has one goal and three assists on the year. He scored the game-winning goal against California and assisted on game-winners against Maryland and at Penn State.

Both Ianni and Wynne were starters on the U.S. Under-20 National Team that shut out its first three opponents to win Group D and advanced to the Round of 16 at the 2005 World Youth Championships. The duo was also named pre-season All-Americans by Soccer America.

The 12-4-3 Bruins are ranked No. 7 in the NSCAA final regular season poll and are the No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament, which begins this week. UCLA's first tournament game is on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 7 pm against the winner of SMU/San Francisco.
