UCLA Junior Jason Kapono Is John R. Wooden Award Midseason Top 30 Candidate

Dec. 29, 2001

UCLA junior Jason Kapono, who was a preseason Top 50 Wooden Award nominee, is on the Midseason Top 30 Wooden list released Friday.

A national poll was conducted of The John R. Wooden Award Midseason Committee to determine the Top 30 Midseason Candidates for the 2001-2002 Wooden Award Player of the Year and All-American Team. The Top 30 Candidates have been selected based on individual performance and team records thus far in the 2001-2002 season. Players who do not make this list are still eligible for consideration for the Wooden Award.

Through UCLA's first 11 games, Kapono has helped lead the Bruins to a 9-2 overall record, including a seven-game winning streak and a 2-0 mark in the Pac-10. He's UCLA's leading scorer (19.9), No. 1 in assists (2.7) and No. 2 in rebounding (5.8). Kapono is shooting 51.1 from the field and leads the Bruins in three-point (52.9, 36-68) and foul shooting (83.3, 45-54). Last Thursday, in UCLA's win over Columbia, Kapono set the school record for three-pointers, breaking the old mark of 197, set by Tracy Murray, 1990-92. Through the Georgetown game, Kapono had 202 three-pointers. Last season as a sophomore, Kapono was a finalist for the Wooden Award, given annually to the nation's top player.

On Tuesday, March 26, 2002, the ten player Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced. One member of the Wooden Award All-American Team will be selected on Sunday April 7, 2002 to receive the Wooden Award Trophy as the nation's "Most Outstanding Collegiate Basketball Player of the Year."
