Ojai, Calif. - Defending champion Rodrigo Grilli of UCLA posted a pair of victories Thursday in opening round action at the Pac-10 Championships at Ojai's Libbey Park. Marcin Matkowski and Chris Lam were also victorious.
Grilli defeated Arizona's Carl Hagman, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round and then posted a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Cal's Conor Niland. He will face Washington's Alex Vlaski in Friday's quarterfinals.
Matkowski, a heavy favorite to win the championships, defeated Arizona State's Olivier Charroin, 6-3, 6-2. He will next take on Johan Berg of USC. Lam downed Washington's Christopher Palmanshofer, 6-1, 6-4, setting up a second round match against Manuel Kost of Oregon.
Bruin senior Erfan Djahangiri was the only other UCLA player competing in the main draw, however he fell to Arizona State's Pim Van Mele, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
In the Pac-10 Invitational draw, four Bruins advanced through first-round play. Alberto Francis defeated Cal's Dean Wallace, 6-2, 7-6(2). He will next face Stanford's Joe Kao. Chris Surapol posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Cal's Jeff King and then moved on for a 6-0, 6-2 decision over USC's Daniel Tontz, giving him a spot in Friday's quarterfinals.
Freshman Aaron Yovan knocked off Washington's Nick Weiss, 7-5, 6-2. He fell to Cal's Mik Ledvonova, 6-4, 6-3 in the second round. Travis Kinard was the other Bruin victorious Thursday, as he defeated Stanford's Carter Morris, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5.
Lassi Ketola received a first round bye. Doubles play begins tomorrow.
