No. 2 Bruins Host UCSB in Home Opener

Sept. 2, 2003

Third-Annual UCLA Women's Cup Begins Wednesday . . .
For the third year in a row, the UCLA women's soccer team will play host to the UCLA Women's Cup at Spaulding Field. Play kicks off Wednesday, with the No. 2 Bruins taking on UC Santa Barbara (1-1) at 7:00 p.m. The Bruins will then take on St. Mary's (1-1) on Friday at 7:00 p.m. The final match of the UCLA Women's Cup will be on Sunday, with UCSB and St. Mary's facing off at 1:00 p.m.

Bruins Tie Top-Ranked Santa Clara in Double-OT . . .
Second-ranked UCLA opened up the 2003 season last Friday, taking on No. 1-ranked Santa Clara up north. With the Bruins down 1-0 late in the match, forward Iris Mora came up with a clutch goal at the 88:53 mark of regulation, helping UCLA escape defeat. The two teams then played two scoreless overtime periods. UCLA outshot the country's top-ranked team, 17-7.

UCLA Downs Pepperdine, 2-0 . . .
The Bruins played their second match of the season last Sunday, defeating No. 13 Pepperdine, 2-0 in Malibu. UCLA freshman Caitlin Ursini got things started for the Bruins, registering the game's first goal in the 30th minute on an assist from fellow freshman Mary Castelanelli. Bruin senior Sarah-Gayle Swanson added an unassisted insurance goal in the 48th minute.

Bruins Move up to No. 2 Nationally . . .
Following its 1-1 tie with then-No. 1 Santa Clara, UCLA equalled its highest ranking ever Monday, moving up to No. 2 in the latest NSCAA/adidas National Poll. The Bruins, who started the season at No. 3, moved ahead of the preseason No. 1 Broncos, and currently sit right behind top-ranked North Carolina. In Soccer America's weekly poll, the Bruins remained at No. 3 behind North Carolina and Stanford. Complete polls listed at bottom of page.

Pryce Named Preseason All-American, Player of the Year Candidate . . .
Bruin senior Nandi Pryce, a first-team NSCAA/adidas All-American in 2002, was recently selected as one of just 16 players in the nation named to the "Watch List" for the MAC Hermann Trophy. The award is given annually to the top player in collegiate soccer. In late August, she was also named to Soccer America's Preseason All-America Team. As a junior last season, Pryce helped the Bruin defense rank second in the Pac-10 in goals allowed (13), goals against average (0.57) and shutouts (12). Most recently, she helped the Under-21 U.S. National Team capture its fifth straight Nordic Cup title.

Bruins Missing Three Key Players to Start the Year . . .
Injuries have sidelined three returning players expected to make a significant impact this season. Jill Oakes is still recovering from an injury suffered in the NCAA Tournament against USC, while both Katie Rivera and Crystal James suffered injuries in the offseason. Head coach Jillian Ellis is still hopeful that Oakes and Rivera will be available to play later in the year. James, a junior, will most likely redshirt and still have two years of eligibility remaining.
