No.13 Bruins Head to Western Intercollegiate

March 25, 2005

The 13th-ranked UCLA men's golf team begins the Spring Quarter by traveling to one of the most revered college tournaments on the West Coast. The 59th Annual Western Intercollegiate will be hosted by San Jose State University at Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz, CA, Mar. 28-29.

"The Western Intercollegiate is the oldest collegiate tournament on the West Coast," said UCLA Head Coach O. D. Vincent. "Pasatiempo is one of the country's great traditional courses. It forces players to make good decisions, especially around the greens, and it requires a lot of patience to score well."

The classic 1928 Alister Mackenzie designed layout will play to a par of 70 over 6,445 yards. Mackenzie also designed Cypress Point Golf Club in Monterey, The Meadow Club in Fairfax and Augusta National, site of the Masters.

"We won this event a couple of years ago," said Vincent. "We had a pretty good spring after that and we're hoping to do the same thing this year."

The Bruins last won this event in 2003 with a team score of 855 (+15). Former All-American Steve Conway, then a junior, won the individual title with a two-under par total of 208. Two years ago, no team posted a single round better than par and just two players scored below par over 54 holes. (UCLA's second round score of even par 280 was the best of the tournament.)

In the 58-year history of the event, only one team has broken par to win.

Representing the Bruins will be three sophomores and two freshmen.

Freshman Daniel Im, voted GolfWeek's national Player of the Week, recently recorded his first collegiate victory. Im won the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship Mar. 13 against the best field in the country. He defeated South Carolina's Mark Anderson in a one-hole playoff to capture his first collegiate crown. Im also defeated reigning U.S. Amateur champion Ryan Moore of UNLV, New Mexico All-American Spencer Levin and 2003 NCAA champion Alejandro Canizares of Arizona State.

Sophomores Joakim Renstrom, Peter Campbell and Chris Heintz and freshman Kevin Chappell will complete the UCLA lineup.

Renstrom recorded a fourth place finish at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate, Campbell won the Gold Rush in September, Heintz has recorded three straight Top 10 finishes and Chappell boasts a 95% success rate for contributing counting scores.
