UCLA Men's Basketball Hosts Global Sports On Nov. 14 in Final Exhibition Game of Season

Welcome - to tonight's (Wednesday, Nov. 14) UCLA final exhibition game vs. Global Sports in Pauley Pavilion. UCLA's 2001-02 regular season-opener is at the Maui Invitational on Monday, Nov. 19, with the Bruins facing Houston (8:30 p.m. PST, ESPN2). UCLA's regular-season home opener is Wednesday, Nov. 28 vs. Pepperdine.

UCLA is No. 5/No. 6 in National Preseason Rankings - In recently released national preseason rankings, UCLA is No. 5 on the AP writer's poll and No. 6 on the USA Today/ESPN coaches balloting.

The AP preseason Top 10 - 1. Duke, 2. Maryland, 3. Illinois, 4. Kentucky, 5. UCLA, 6. Florida, 7. Kansas, 8. Missouri, 9. Iowa, 10. St. Joseph's.

Bruins Picked To Win 2002 Pacific-10 Title - On Oct. 31 in Los Angeles, at Pac-10 Media Day in the Staples Center, UCLA was an overwhelming favorite to finish first in the 2001-02 Pacific-10 Conference men's basketball race, according to a poll of media members who cover the league. The Bruins gathered 24 of 27 possible first-place votes. Here's the balloting - 1. UCLA (24) 267, 2. Stanford (1) 22, 3. USC 208, 4. Arizona (2) 200, 5. California 161, 6. Oregon 117, 7. Arizona State 111, 8. Oregon State 95, 9. Washington State 57, 10. Washington 47.

Exhibition Games - The Bruins opened the 2001-02 season with two exhibition games in Pauley Pavilion - defeating the EA SPORTS West Coast All-Stars, 102-77 on Nov. 8 and on Wednesday, Nov. 14, hosting Global Sports (7:30 p.m.).

Nov. 8-UCLA 102, EA Sports 77 - With five players in double figures, the Bruins defeated the EA Sports West Coast All-Stars, 102-77. UCLA led 50-38 at halftime.

UCLA was led by 18 points from Jason Kapono. Also scoring in double figures for the Bruins were - Billy Knight, 14 points, Andre Patterson, 14 points and six rebounds, Dan Gadzuric, 12 points and six rebounds and T. J. Cummings, 10 points. UCLA's leading rebounder was Matt Barnes, nine rebounds, seven points, four assists and five steals.

Regular-Season Opener - The Bruins will open the 2001-02 regular season at the 18th annual EA SPORTS Maui Invitational hosted by Chaminade, Nov. 19-21 at the Lahaina Civic Center. Joining UCLA are defending National Champion Duke, along with Kansas (the Jayhawks visit Pauley Pavilion on Jan. 12), South Carolina, Ball State, Seton Hall, Houston and host Chaminade. UCLA's first round game will be against Houston on Monday, Nov. 19 at 8:30 p.m. PST (ESPN2). Please see the Maui Invite bracket on page 88 of the 2001-02 UCLA Men's Basketball Media Guide.

UCLA Head Coach Steve Lavin - Is entering his sixth season at the Bruin helm, with a school record of 114-47 (70.8). The 2001 Pac-10 Coach of the Year, Steve Lavin is one of just three coaches in the nation who have led their schools to four NCAA "Sweet 16s" in the last five years (Michigan State's Tom Izzo and Duke's Mike Krzyzewski are the others).

The first Pac-10 Coaches Media Teleconference will be Thursday, Dec. 13. The second one will be Tuesday, Jan. 8 and every Tuesday after that during the regular season. Two New Assistant Coaches - Entering their first season as coaches on the Bruin staff are Gerald Madkins, filling a recruiting position, and Patrick Sandle (pronounced, San-dal). Madkins replaces Michael Holton, who took the head coaching position at the University of Portland and Sandle replaced Steve Spencer, who is the new head coach at Orange Coast College.

Madkins, who spent last year on the staff at CS Stanislaus, was a Bruin standout guard and senior captain in 1992. That season, with fellow seniors Don MacLean and Darrick Martin, Madkins helped lead the Bruins to the Pac-10 Championship and the NCAA West Regional final. Following his collegiate career, he played six years of professional basketball, including stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors.

Sandle, who prepped at Crenshaw HS and was a senior in 1980 under the legendary Willie West, for the last five seasons has been on Ben Howland's staff at Pittsburgh (1999-01) and Northern Arizona (1996-99). Overall, he comes to UCLA with 16 years of coaching experience, including seven at the Div. I level.

Madkins and Sandle will join veteran Bruin top assistant Jim Saia, entering his sixth season on the UCLA staff.

Kapono and Gadzuric Preseason Wooden Award Nominees - Junior forward Jason Kapono and senior center Dan Gadzuric are on the 2002 Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 list. Kapono is also on the Playboy All-American squad and the Naismith Preseason list (Top 30) and is a preseason AP second-team All-America. Last season, Kapono was a Wooden Award Finalist and first-team All-Pac-10 performer (for the second consecutive season).
