UCLA will host the second annual Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational this Thursday through Saturday, April 8-10. The invitational, named after two of the greatest athletes to have ever competed at UCLA, will be held at Drake Stadium and Marshall Field.
Thursday's action will consist of the hammer throw Invitational. On Friday, University/Open competition will take place on both the track and in the field. Friday night will be highlighted by the University/Open and Invitational Distance Carnival. Saturday will consist entirely of Invitational events.
Collegiate teams scheduled to compete at this year's invitational are the Arizona Wildcats, Stanford Cardinal, Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State Northridge and Utah State.
Saturday's invitational will be composed of some of the nation's elite athletes. Former Bruin NCAA Champions Ato Boldon (100m, 200m), Malachi Davis (4x400m), Brian Fell (4x400m, DMR), John Godina (SP, DT) and Jess Strutzel (800m, DMR) will be competing. Also entered are former All-Americans Kyle Erickson, Scott Slover and Scott Wiegand.
Also entered in Saturday's competition are: Track & Field News' 2003 Athlete of the Year, World 400m hurdles champion and former USC Trojan Felix Sanchez, 2003 World 400m indoor champion and outdoor runner-up Tyree Washington, 2003 U.S. discus champion Carl Brown, 2003 World 400m hurdles runner-up Joey Woody and 2000 Olympic gold medallist Maurice Greene.
