Los Angeles - The No. 7-seeded UCLA women's tennis team lost the doubles point but rallied to win four-straight singles matches en route to a 4-1 victory over the University of Washington in an NCAA Regional Final at the Los Angeles Tennis Center Saturday. With the victory, UCLA (18-4) now advances to the NCAA Round of 16 in Stanford, Calif. next week. The Bruins will play the winner of tomorrow's USC/Oregon match on May 16 in Stanford.
The Huskies (14-11) earned their one point of the afternoon the hard way, knocking off two Bruin teams ranked in the top-5 in the country. At No. 1 doubles, Washington's Claire Carter/Darija Klaic defeated UCLA's fourth-ranked Petya Marinova/Sara Walker, 8-3. Following a UCLA victory at No. 3 doubles, the one point awarded for doubles play came down to court No. 2, where Washington's Colleen Gray/Dea Sumantri pulled off a 9-8 upset over fifth-ranked Megan Bradley/Lauren Fisher.
Down 1-0 heading into singles action, the Bruins came out strong and immediately evened the match at one apiece following Walker's impressive 6-2, 6-3 victory over Klaic at No. 2 singles. Not too long after that, Bradley and Fisher each picked up singles wins at the Nos. 1 and 5 positions respectively. The match was eventually decided at the No. 3 singles position, where Marinova prevailed in a three-set battle over Washington's Ilona Kordonskaya, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
It is UCLA's 20th appearance in the NCAA Round of 16.
