2016 NFL Draft
Three Bruins To Play in Super Bowl

Jan. 24, 2005

Three players, one assistant coach and one television broadcaster will be representing UCLA in Super Bowl XXXIX.

Wide receiver Freddie Mitchell and cornerback Matt Ware will be playing for the NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles. Linebacker Roman Phifer will be playing in his third Super Bowl in the last four years for the New England Patriots. Former Super Bowl champion quarterback Troy Aikman will be calling the action for Fox Sports. Former Bruin assistant Ted Williams will be on the sidelines for the Eagles.

Mitchell (#84), who concluded his Bruin career in 2000, ranks fifth in career receiving yardage (2,135 yards) and ninth in career receptions (119). In 2000, he set the single-season receiving yardage record with 1,494 yards on 77 receptions (No. 2 on that single-season list). He is in his fourth year with the Eagles. He left for the NFL after his junior season and was a first-round selection by the Eagles.

Ware (#21) is in his first year with the Eagles after being selected in the third round of the 2004 NFL Draft. He has been a starter on special teams since returning from an injury early in the year. During his three seasons with the Bruins, Matt started 33 of the 34 games (30 at cornerback, three at safety) in which he played and made 117 tackles and eight interceptions in those games. He left for the NFL after his junior season.

As a senior in 1990, Phifer (#95) ranked third on the team with 71 tackles and also made three interceptions. In 1991, he was a second-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams. He played eight seasons with the Rams (four in St. Louis) and was with the New York Jets in 1999 and 2000. He has spent the last four years with the Patriots.

Aikman played two seasons (1987-88) for the Bruins, leading them to a 10-2 record in each year. As a senior, he finished third in the Heisman Trophy balloting and was a consensus All-American. He was the No. 1 pick of the 1989 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. He played for the Cowboys for 12 years and led them to three Super Bowl championships. He is the only quarterback in history to win three Super Bowls in a four-year span.

Williams is in his 10th season as a member of the Philadelphia coaching staff and his eighth coaching the running backs. He was a member of Terry Donahue's Bruin staff for 11 years (1980-90), coaching linebackers and running backs.

This is the fifth straight year UCLA has been represented in the Super Bowl and the 25th time in the last 26 seasons. Last year, Phifer and wide receiver J.J. Stokes were with the Patriots while running back DeShaun Foster, cornerback Ricky Manning, Jr. and injured tight end Mike Seidman played with the Carolina Panthers.
