Los Angeles - The third-ranked UCLA men's tennis team won the doubles point, then took five of six singles matches en route to a 6-1 victory over UC Santa Barbara in the 2002 season opener for both teams Wednesday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
UCLA (1-0, 0-0 Pac-10) received strong performances from Tobias Clemens, Erfan Djahangiri and Lassi Ketola, as all notched straight-set victories. Both Marcin Matkowski and Rodrigo Grilli needed three sets, but were able to pull it out in the end.
UCSB (0-1, 0-0 Big West) earned its one point on the day at No. 1 singles where Carlos Palencia registered a 6-1, 6-2 victory over UCLA's Jean-Julien Rojer.
The Bruins return to action this weekend, as the team will split up to participate in two tournaments. Half the squad will be competing at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Las Vegas and the other half will be at the Sherwood Cup in Thousand Oaks.
