Box Score

Los Angeles - The No. 14-seeded UCLA women's soccer team earned a spot in the third round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championships for the sixth year in a row Sunday, posting a 3-0 victory over San Diego in a second round contest at UCLA's Drake Stadium. The Bruins, who move their record to 15-6 on the season, will face Duke (15-7) in the next round. The Blue Devils upset No. 3 Virginia, 3-0 on Sunday.

Sunday marked the second time this season that the Bruins and Toreros have played, as UCLA recorded a 4-0 win back on Aug. 27 in the season opener for both teams. Freshman forward Danesha Adams, who had two goals in that prior meeting, duplicated her performance Sunday, scoring UCLA's final two goals of the match. Adams headed in an Iris Mora corner kick in the 58th minute of play and followed that up with another goal in the 81st minute. Her second goal came off a shot from about five yards out set up by passes from Lindsay Greco and Kim Devine.

UCLA's first strike of the match came from junior midfielder Jill Oakes, who, like Adams, headed in a corner kick by Mora.

"I thought we came out and really played well from the start," said UCLA head coach Jillian Ellis. "We took advantage of the opportunities we were given and I'm really proud of this team for understanding the importance of this match. It's always tough to beat a team twice in a season so we are extremely happy with this result."

UCLA outshot San Diego, 14-4 on the afternoon. Bruin goalkeeper Valerie Henderson, who made one save on the say, posted her ninth shutout of the season. San Diego goalkeeper Karen Cook finished with five saves.

Sunday marked the third time that UCLA has defeated San Diego in postseason play. The Bruins defeated the Toreros, 2-1 in the second round back in 1999 and 2-0 in the first round last year.

Because it is the higher seed, UCLA will likely host next week's third-round match against the Blue Devils at Drake Stadium. Date and time will be released on Monday.
