The Bruins have recorded four top 10 finishes during their Fall season, including a fourth place finish at the Husky Invitational. They placed sixth at the Inverness Intercollegiates and at the Carpet Capital event, and they finished eighth at the Northwest Classic. The Bruins were ranked 35th in the GolfWeek poll for Oct. 28.
Upcoming Events -
The Bruins will participate in The Prestige, hosted by UC Davis, at Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Springs on Nov. 6-7. The Firecliff Course measures 7,056 yards from the Black tees and is rated 74.1 (138 slope).
Junior Parker McLachlin -
Has averaged 75.1 strokes in nine rounds. Eight of his nine rounds have counted in team scoring. He tied for 13th place at the Inverness Intercollegiates and at the Husky Invitational. Best round of the season was a two-under par 70 in the first round of the Carpet Capital event. He has 10 career top 20 finishes and five career top 10 finishes.
Sophomore Travis Johnson -
Has averaged 74.0 in 12 rounds with three rounds under par and one round under 70. Ninety-two percent (11 of 12) of his rounds have counted this season in team scoring. Fired a 69 in his first competitive collegiate round of the season at the Northwest Classic, where he finished in a tie for 25th. Tied for 13th at the Inverness Intercolelgiates. He has two career top 10 finishes and four in the top 20.
Sophomore J.T. Kohut -
Averaging 75.5 strokes in nine rounds this season. Tied for 42nd at the Carpet Capital after posting a pair of 73s in the first two rounds. Has one career top 20 finish. Six of his nine rounds have counted in team scoring. Best round of 72 was posted in the final round of the Northwest Classic at Trysting Tree.
Freshman Steve Conway -
Leads the team with a scoring average of 73.3 in 12 rounds. All 12 of his rounds have counted in team scoring. Has been the Bruins top finisher in three of their four tournaments this season. Posted a collegiate best round of 64 in the final round of the Northwest Classic to finish in a tie for 11th. Also tied for fifth place at the Husky Invitational with a final round score of 71. Tied for 23rd at the Carpet Capital event. Leads the team with four rounds under par. He was ranked 96th in the GolfWeek poll Oct. 28. Earned 2000 AJGA Second Team All-America honors.
Freshman John Merrick -
Averaging 74.7 in 12 rounds this season with one top 20 finish. Tied for 18th at the Carpet Capital event, where he also posted a one-under par score of 71 in the first round. Eighty-three percent (10 of 12) of his scores have counted in team scoring.
Freshman Roy Moon -
Averaging 74.3 in three rounds with one round under par. Posted a 71 in the final round at the Northwest Classic to finish in a tie for 71st.
Head Coach Brad Sherfy earned 1998 Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors after guiding the Bruins to five tournament victories, the most by a UCLA team in 11 previous years. Six years ago, the Bruins were ranked 64th nationally and have been ranked as high as 10th. Sherfy, a 1978 UCLA All-American, guided the 1997 Bruins to their first NCAA appearance since 1993. An outstanding player, Sherfy has played in four U.S. Opens, three PGA Championships and won more than 80 events on various satellite tours. In 1998, he qualified and played in the Buick (Torrey Pines, LaJolla) and Nissan (Riviera, Los Angeles) Opens. In February 2000, Sherfy's prot?g?, Byron Schlagenhauf (UCLA, 1997-99), qualified for one of the two open spots in the 2000 Nissan Open. Schlagenhauf was one of eight former Bruins to play at Riviera during the week. The others were Jay Delsing, Brandt Jobe, Scott McCarron, 1999 Ryder Cup Team member Steve Pate, 1994 and '95 Nissan Open champion Corey Pavin, Tom Pernice, Jr., and Duffy Waldorf.
