This Week In Water Polo: The No. 2 Bruins (10-2 overall, 3-0 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) return to Northern California this weekend for a MPSF matchup with No. 5 California and a second visit with No. 3 Stanford. UCLA will travel to Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill on Saturday, October 24, for a 10 a.m. whistle with Cal, over whom the Bruins own a 52-44-1 lifetime record.

The Golden Bears (7-7 overall, 2-3 MPSF) are led in scoring by Ryan Flynn, who has tallied 38 points, including one two-pointer. Goalkeeper Peter Kiefer is posting a 7.39 goals against average, and has pulled down 100 saves. Most recently, the Bears finished eighth at the Oct. 17-18 NorCal Tournament.

The NorCal Tournament host, Stanford, finshed third and will host the Bruins again on Sunday, Oct. 25 at noon at deGuerre pool. Brian Heifferon leads the No. 3 Cardinal in scoring, with 31 points, and goalie Chris Aguilera had 134 saves heading into the NorCal Tournament. Stanford (13-3 overall, 4-1 MPSF) edges UCLA 55-46 overall, but the Bruins grabbed an 8-7 overtime victory this past weekend.

Last Week's Recap: Senior co-captain Sam Grayeli (Costa Mesa, Costa Mesa HS) scored nine goals en route to UCLA's second place finish at the NorCal Tournament. The Bruins defeated St. Francis University (18-2), Long Beach State (13-7), and Stanford (8-7, ot) before being upset 7-5 by UC Irvine in the championship match. Grayeli scored at least one goal in every game, as did sophomores Sean Kern (Honolulu, HI, Punahou HS) and Andy Bailey (San Clemente, San Clemente HS).

What's Ahead: The Bruins return to Westwood for homecoming on October 31, hosting Stanford at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center prior to the football game. UCLA welcomes Long Beach State to Sunset Recreation Center on Sunday, November 1, at noon. Both matches are conference games, and will count toward MPSF records.

Who To Watch: The Bruins are outscoring opponents 107-68, thanks largely to Kern's team-leading 25 goals. Kern was last season's leading scorer and earned third-team All-MPSF and All-America honors. Grayeli follows Kern on the squad's scoring list, with 15 points, while sophomore Dave Parker (Orinda, Miramonte HS) is currently third, with 13 points. Bailey and Adam Wright (Seal Beach, Wilson HS) are tied for fourth with 10 points, and Wright leads the squad in steals, with 17. Sophomore Blake Wellen (Mill Valley, Tamalpais HS) is on Wright's heels with 16 steals, and the two switch places in the assists category, with Wellen leading Wright 15 to 12. Junior goalkeeper Parsa Bonderson, who last week was named UCLA's Fox Sports West Student Athlete of the Week, has tallied 84 saves and is posting a 5.64 goals against average. The Bruin squad averages 8.8 goals scored per game, with the team shooting 40%.
