The second-ranked UCLA women's golf team hit the jackpot in Las Vegas Monday, taking the first round lead at the Las Vegas Founders Women's Collegiate Showdown with a school record team score.

The Bruins torched the par 72 Anthem Golf Course, firing a nine-under par score of 279. They lead second-place Arizona by six shots. The Wildcats were at 285 (-3), followed by Pepperdine and Kent State at 288 (E). Host UNLV was fifth at 291 (+3).

The previous UCLA record (to par) was 281 (-7) set in 2003 in the first round of the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, TN. UCLA's score also eclipsed the tournament record of 280 set by Washington in 2004.

All five players posted rounds under par for the Bruins, a first. Freshman Jane Park fired a 68 (-4), a collegiate best, and was tied for second place. Freshman Tiffany Joh and junior Hannah Jun were tied for fifth at two-under par 70. Sophomore Amie Cochran and senior Susie Mathews were tied for 10th at one-under par 71.

Da Soi Chung of UNLV held the first round lead after day one with a five-under par 67.

Second round action continues Tuesday.
